Perfect Microwave Rice recipe is crazy easy (with no special equipment!) and turns out even fluffier than it does from a stovetop.
Are you a huge fan of white rice but are devastated by the fact that you can’t bring your rice cooker to your dorm? Don’t worry, you can make yourself a huge bowl of fluffy goodness in your microwave!
PERFECT MICROWAVE RICE
So you had big plans for that rice cooker you got on Black Friday but then you read the rules for your dorm and realized that there’s no way they’re gonna let you have it. It’s okay, don’t panic, you can still make yourself some fluffy, moist, delicious rice without having to break the rules. Break the rules for something more interesting.
You may not immediately love the idea of using the microwave for rice, but trust us, it turns out amazing and not crunchy. Unlike cooking rice on a stovetop, it’s harder to burn rice in the microwave. It also rarely comes out crunchy and hard, which is great news for both you and your incisors.
HOW TO MAKE PERFECT MICROWAVE RICE
- Add rice, water, and oil to a large microwave-safe bowl.
- Cook on high, uncovered, for 10 minutes.
- Cook on 40% power, uncovered for 15 minutes.
- Let sit 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork and serve.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH RICE
So the rice that usually comes with takeout often dries out when you reheat it. You can make this rice recipe on day two when you want to eat the rest of yesterday’s dinner. The great thing about rice is that it pairs well with practically every dinner.
VARIATIONS ON RICE
- Spices: You don’t just have to eat plain rice. You can add a dash of spice to give your rice a theme. One of our favorites is to add a Cajun spice blend and thoroughly mix it into the rice. You can also use Italian seasoning, paprika, thyme, or those red pepper flakes that pizza places always bring with your meal but no one ever uses.
PLATE IT UP
Rice goes with pretty much everything, and, just like we mentioned above, you can make a new batch to go with the takeout you ordered last week. Make the rice and arrange it in a bowl so that there’s a little space in the center, then reheat your leftover separate. Once the leftovers are warmed up, pour them onto the rice nest and you’ve got yourself a beautiful and tasty dinner.
SAVE SOME FOR LATER
Rice is the perfect college kid food since it’s cheap, you can store the uncooked stuff for a long time, and it keeps you feeling full. You can also store cooked rice in the fridge for up to a week before you need to get rid of it. To save some space, pour whatever is left of your rice into a sealable bag and put it in your fridge. If there’s nothing else in your fridge you can just cover the top of the bowl with some cling wrap. As long as you can keep most of the moisture out, you’re good.
COST FACTOR
$: This is one of the most cost-effective recipes you’ll ever make since cooked rice lasts well in the fridge, it fills you up, and you only need three ingredients, one of which is free.
MICROWAVE TABLE
- 1,000 watts or higher: Higher wattage, lower cook time. Our microwave is about 1,250 watts, but if you have one with about 1,000 watts you will want to cook the rice for 12 minutes, then for 17.
- 700 watts: Microwaves under about 900 don’t heat things evenly or consistently, so don’t go anywhere while you’re cooking. Cook the rice for 17 minutes, then for 22.
