MICROWAVE SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
You’ve been trying to get the gaming group to meet up for three weeks and you’ve all finally managed to settle on a time and place. That place is your dorm, and the time is now!
You know just as well as anyone else that people get super grumpy if they don’t have a snack, and no one wants to order a pizza again (but you should make our Pepperoni Pizza Dip). What do you do? First, roll for initiative then make some meatballs (that was a DND joke, for those who don’t play.)
You can make a batch of delicious, filling Sweet and Sour Meatballs in a matter of minutes, and they’re great to serve up to a large group of people. They also keep well in the fridge, which means that they make the perfect snack for later when you remember that your midterm is tomorrow and you were too busy playing tabletop games to study.
HOW TO MAKE MICROWAVE SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
- Place meatballs in a 3-qt. microwave-safe dish; top with carrots, onion, pepper, and garlic.
- In a small bowl, mix sweet and sour sauce and soy sauce; pour over meatballs.
- Microwave, covered, on high for 6-8 minutes or until vegetables are tender and meatballs are heated through, stirring twice.
- Serve with rice.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
Sweet and Sour Meatballs make the perfect dinner. Just make a serving of sticky white rice to serve them with and your good to go.
VARIATIONS ON SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
- Add-ins: Finely chop up an onion and mix it in with the meatballs before you heat them up. You can also add a dash of your favorite spices, like onion salt, paprika, or sesame seeds. Or try adding a drizzle of soy sauce or chili sauce to the sweet and sour sauce to spice it up a little.
PLATE IT UP
Pour the meatballs and the sauce into a large bowl and mix them together to thoroughly coat them. If you’re serving them up for a group of people, get a bunch of serving toothpicks (no, broken pencils won’t work just as well).
Set them out next to the meatballs with an empty plastic cup for people to throw the toothpicks in when they’re done. Or if you’re more interested in serving this for dinner, serve the meatballs over warm white rice.
SAVE SOME FOR LATER
Put your meatballs into a bowl and wrap it in plastic wrap or pour them into a sealable bag. Put them in the fridge, and they should stay good for up to 3 days before you should throw them away and make some more.
COST FACTOR
$$: Both the meatballs and the sauce call for a fairly long list of ingredients, but you can find everything at your grocery store easily. You may already have a good number of ingredients in your dorm, so it could be pretty easy!
MICROWAVE TABLE
- 1,000 watts or higher: Higher wattage, lower cook time. Our microwave is about 1,250 watts, but if you have one with about 1,000 watts you will want to cook for closer to you’ll want to do closer to 7-9 minutes.
- 700 watts: Microwaves under about 900 don’t heat things evenly or consistently, so don’t go anywhere while you’re cooking. Cook for anywhere from 9-12 minutes, but keep an eye on it.
