SERVE MEATBALL SUB SANDWICHES WITH

The best things you can add to a sandwich are chips. We recommend BBQ chips, nacho cheese chips, potato chips or, if you’re in certain North American countries/regions that have them, ketchup chips. Trust us, if you’ve never tried a ketchup chip, you’re in for a treat. You eat them with some macaroni salad, or a green salad if health is your thing.

VARIATIONS MEATBALL SUB SANDWICHES

  • Spicy Meatball Sub: Okay, so you know and we know that you love hot sauce. Well, be prepared to crank up the heat. Slice up some jalapeños, add fried onions from a bag and drizzle some spicy mayo or creamy jalapeño sauce over the top. This is the sandwich to end all sandwiches, so prepare yourself.
  • Lighten Up: Substitute Turkey Meatballs and light cheese to make these a bit healthier. You can also ditch the hoagie roll and serve on a plate of zucchini noodles, but you won’t be able to carry it around campus as easily.
  • Toppings: Add some banana peppers (they are the bright yellow ones) and canned mushrooms for some extra Italian flavor. Go full sandwich shop and top with stuff like olives, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and bell peppers.

SAVE SOME FOR LATER

So hoagie rolls drenched in spaghetti sauce famously don’t refrigerate well, and don’t you dare leave it out at room temperature, you’ll absolutely regret it. You can keep the insides of the sandwich in the fridge for up to 3 days, but you’ll need to keep the rolls separate.

COST FACTOR

$: You just need some cheese, a package of meatballs, some spaghetti sauce, and some hoagie rolls. These are all reasonably priced, aka cheap, at your local grocery store.

MICROWAVE TABLE

  • 1,000 watts or higher: Higher wattage, lower cook time. Our microwave is about 1,250 watts, but if you have one with about 1,000 watts you will want to cook your meatballs for about :54 per 6 meatballs, then again for about 2:24 until it’s the right heat.
  • 700 watts: Microwaves under about 900 don’t heat things evenly or consistently, so don’t go anywhere while you’re cooking. Cook your meatballs for 1:17, then again for 3:26, and keep an eye on it.
