Microwave Sloppy Joes are a classic American sandwich that is delightfully messy and absolutely delicious.

Sloppy Joes are tasty, they’re easy to make, and they are sloppy, so it’s a fitting name. We’ve made a tasty version that you can make super simply and munch on whenever you’re feeling snacky.

MICROWAVE SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Joes get their name from an old fashioned term for a dive restaurant, which is both kind of cute and kind of sad. On the one hand, it’s neat that Sloppy Joes remember where they come from, but it’s also sad that they haven’t risen above their humble origins. Either way, they are absolutely delicious, and you can make your own tasty version in your own dorm microwave.

HOW TO MAKE MICROWAVE SLOPPY JOES

  • Mince the beef meatballs very finely.
  • Mix with the rest of the ingredients (except the hamburger bun and cheese) in a cereal bowl.
  • Microwave for 2 minutes on high power.
  • Mix well again (make sure liquid is saucy), then add to hamburger bun and top with cheese.

VARIATIONS

There are many different ways to make Sloppy Joes, so why not combine all of them at once? Just kidding, don’t do that, but you should definitely try some of these fun variations.

        • Green onions
        • Bacon bits
        • Red beans
        • Hot sauce
        • Chopped hot peppers

SERVE WITH

Sloppy Joes are awesome with a delicious side of Microwave Bacon Creamed Corn, Crispy Microwave Tater Tots, or a plate full of homemade Microwave BBQ Potato Chips.

SAVE SOME FOR LATER

Okay, so here’s where things get slightly complicated. You can keep the innards of your Sloppy Joe in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 3 days, but you do not want to store your leftovers with the bun still on it. The bun will get really soggy and gross, so you should just reheat the insides and put a new bun on when you’re ready to snack.

COST FACTOR

$$: This recipe is delicious, but it does cost a little bit more money. Trust us when we say that it is 100% worth it though, since fresh ingredients pretty much always taste better.

MICROWAVE TABLE

  • 1,000 watts or higher: Higher wattage, lower cook time. Our microwave is about 1,250 watts, but if you have one with about 1,000 watts you will want to microwave the Sloppy Joe for 2:25 minutes.
  • 700 watts: Microwaves under about 900 don’t heat things evenly or consistently, so don’t go anywhere while you’re cooking. Cook your Sloppy Joe for 3:25 minutes.
