Microwave Corn Dogs are made with a honey cornbread batter and sliced hot dogs, cooked in just 2 minutes for a quick and easy dinner.

Corn Dogs are really straightforward and delicious, and you can make your own gourmet version in the microwave in your dorm, no need for a deep fryer or the burns and fire hazards that come with a deep fryer.

Microwave Corndog

MICROWAVE CORNDOG

So there you are in your dorm room, corndog-less and hungry. You’re pretty sure that you’re not allowed to have a deep fryer in your dorm room (you definitely aren’t) and you think you can’t make a corndog without one (you definitely can). All you need is a microwave, some choice ingredients, and the power of imagination.

This corndog doesn’t need a stick to be delicious. Plus, who just has corndog sticks laying around for everyday use? Okay, we actually do, but don’t judge!

If you want it to have an even better flavor microwave the hot dog slices for 20-30 seconds before you make the batter, they’ll have better flavor from having sizzled and cooked a bit first.

JIFFY CORN MIX

You can also use Jiffy cornbread mix and make 1/4 of the box for your cornbread batter. This cuts out a bunch of ingredients for your meal.

MAKE IT MORE FILLING

Cut up a second hot dog for the filling to make it heartier. This won’t make the cook time any longer.

HOW TO MAKE MICROWAVE CORNDOG

  1. Combine flour, cornmeal, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg white until foamy and then add the milk, oil, and honey.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until just combined.
  4. Use the cooking spray to grease a microwave-safe bowl and pour cornbread mixture into it.
  5. Top with hot dog slices.
  6. Microwave for 1-2 minutes, depending on how you like your cornbread to be textured.

VARIATIONS ON MICROWAVE CORNDOGS
Okay, let’s talk dipping sauces. Some people love ketchup, others hate ketchup. Still, others really don’t care either way. But what sauces do people use around the world? Here are some fun, international sauces to try.

  • Argentina: Try taking a page from the Argentinian hot dog and dunk your corn dog into delicious Chimichurri.
  • Australia: aka the “Dippy Doggy,” the “Dagwood Dog,” and the “Pluto Pup,” corndogs are very popular and are served with everything from Brown Sauce to BBQ sauce.
  • Denmark: Try a drizzle of Danish mustard, mayo, and sweet relish
  • France: Serve with chopped onions and Gruyere cheese
  • Japan: Also called an “Asian Fusion Dog,” try serving it with wasabi, kimchi and teriyaki (popular in Japan but invented in the Pacific Northwest.)
  • South Africa: This is more of a hot dog thing but can totally work for corndogs too. Slice the dogs into smaller pieces and serve with chutney, mustard, and tomato relish.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH MICROWAVE CORNDOGS
Get yourself a packet of microwave French fries and serve them up with your delicious corndog. You can also slice up some veggies, specifically celery, carrots or cucumbers, and serve them up for a satisfying crunch to go with the smooth, fluffiness of the dog.

SAVE SOME FOR LATER
Take the remains of your corndog and put it into a sealable bag or container and put it in the fridge. Because of the hot dog portion of the corndog, your leftovers will only stay good in the fridge for up to 3 days before it’s time to throw it out.

COST FACTOR
$: True, there’s a fairly lengthy list of ingredients to buy, but that doesn’t mean you are going to have to shell out serious cash for this recipe. We are seriously tempted to make some sort of joke about how the only dough you need is the kind you put the hot dog in, but we’re above that. Or use a jiffy box mix and you can cut down on costs too. Note above about it.

MICROWAVE TABLE

  • 1,000 watts or higher: Higher wattage, lower cook time. Our microwave is about 1,250 watts, but if you have one with about 1,000 watts you will want to cook for 1:15-2:24, then check it, and add another minute if needed.
  • 700 watts: Microwaves under about 900 don’t heat things evenly or consistently, so don’t go anywhere while you’re cooking. Cook the corndogs for about 1:45-3:26, then add another minute as needed.
